Job Description

Wright City R-II School District has an opening for a full or part-time Speech-Language Pathology Assistant.

Position Title: Speech-Language Pathology Assistant


Reports To: Director of Special Education

Summary: Provides learners an educational opportunity that allows for the development of speech-language skills for the purposes of accessing regular and special education services.

Job Responsibilities:

Instruction and Learning- Student achievement/performance and staff growth

  1. Schedules and instructs students in assigned schools
  2. Assesses students' communication skills (e.g. articulation, fluency, voice, expressive and receptive language, etc) for the purpose of identifying communication disorders, determining program eligibility and developing recommendations for treatment
  3. Acts as a member of a diagnostic team to observe, evaluate and assist with determining the eligibility of speech-language impairments, attend diagnostic conferences and submit written reports of assessment results to meet with state compliance requirements.
  4. Coordinates meetings and processes for eligible students (e.g. testing, IEPs, parent conferences, pre-referral staffing, etc.) for the purpose of presenting evaluation results, developing treatment plans, and/or providing training to parents/students/staff
  5. Assesses the strengths and weaknesses of assigned students on a regular basis and collects and analyzes data systematically
  6. Develops IEPs and implements educational learning plans to meet the speech-language needs and abilities of the students on caseload for the purpose of minimizing the adverse impact of communication disorders in compliance with regulatory requirements. Keeps written evidence of daily and long-range instructional planning for assigned students.
  7. Instructs eligible students in the use of appropriate communication technologies (e.g. hearing aids, FM systems, augmentative communication devices, etc.) for the purpose of minimizing the adverse educational impact of communication disorders in accordance with established guidelines and legal requirements
  8. Encourages students to set and maintain appropriate standards of behavior by implementing all district policies and rules governing student conduct, developing reasonable rules of classroom behavior, and maintaining classroom order in a fair and just manner.
  9. Employs a variety of instructional and therapeutic techniques, interventions, and media consistent with the physical limitations of the location and capabilities of the students.
  10. On a regular basis, assesses student's progress toward instructional goals and objectives. Provides progress reports; maintains accurate, complete student records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations including IEPs and Medicaid as needed. Provides written evidence of routine data collection and analysis.
  11. Takes necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  12. Consistent with building requirements for faculty makes self reasonably available to students and parents for education-related issues outside the instructional day.
  13. Attends staff meetings and in-service training sessions serves on staff committees as required, and continues education to enhance professional development.
  14. Assist special education director using data to anticipate programmatic needs and support student achievement.
  15. Assists with technology for special education, including individual assistive devices
  16. Assists in ordering special education speech-language materials including assessments
  17. Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

Education and/or Experience:


Degree in communication disorders or other related degree


Speech and language experience in schools or other comparable settings, preferred.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations


Valid Speech-Language Pathology Certification

Language Skills


Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and policy and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively one-on-one and before groups.

Mathematical Skills


Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, decimals, and percentages.

Technology Skills


Ability to use basic computer functions associated with creating electronic documents, databases, and spreadsheets. Ability to navigate online reporting systems.

Reasoning Ability


Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Physical Demands


While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear, stand, move, walk at a brisk pace, sit, and use hands and arms to handle, feel and reach. The ability to accompany students anywhere on school premises. The employee is occasionally required to stoop or kneel. Regular attendance on the job is expected and necessary. Additionally, the employee must be able to implement all Board of Education policies, district procedures and to perform Safe Crisis Management procedures (when trained). The employee must be physically able to react and intervene quickly during crisis situations.

-Exerts up to 25 lbs of force frequently, and/or


-Exerts greater than negligible up to 10lbs. constantly.

Terms of Employment:


Terms covering compensation, benefits, and working conditions are specified by the Board of Education's policies, agreements, and approvals. This is a 9-month position with possible extended school year weeks needed.
